Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I hear about the overwhelming number of people leaving Syria and seeking refuge somewhere else, I think about how I can find stories which will help my English Language Development students develop their language skills while also making personal connections to migrations worldwide.

When you walk into my classroom, one of the first things you notice is that almost all of my 7th and 8th grade English Language Development students speak Spanish.

The majority are from Mexico, and almost all of their family stories represent migrations in search of the American Dream. Although many students throughout the school come from Spanish speaking families, my students are still learning English so that they can move forward with learning the rest of the curriculum. At the intermediate level, many of my ELD students have been in these blocked English classes for years, and have developed some of the attitudes toward reading and writing that other struggling readers and writers encounter. Although they know they need to learn to read and write better, they resist the labor of reading and writing. They disengage because so many of them have not found success in school yet. It is really important that I provide a text-rich environment and choose engaging class materials.

My Project

I firmly believe that giving students the choice of what to read, at least sometimes, is key to developing students as readers. Right now, our humble classroom library is housed on a wire storage shelf originally intended for a Family and Consumer Sciences classroom as pantry or equipment storage. Books fall off the ends and slip between the wires. I have hacked it together with cheap MDF paneling and duct tape, but it looks like a hack-job and it is not an inviting way to display the books or keep them from becoming damaged. With new bookshelves, I could display the books in a more appealing way that would invite browsing. The Circuit, by Francisco Jimenez, is a book I would like to incorporate into our whole-class reading because it is told from the point of view of a young boy growing up in a migrant family in Southern California. The last time I used this book with teens, they loved it. I believe it would make a good comparison/contrast to today's refugee stories especially.

Obviously, reading and having a positive text-rich environment will help my students develop their English language skills and open doors for them throughout the remainder of their educations.

On a broader scale, though, one of the most important things we can do to promote peace in this global age is to inform students about the reasons people leave a place and move to another, and to look at both the commonalities and differences in those stories. Knowledge counters fear and violence.
