My second graders are primarily low income, urban children from San Francisco. Fifteen out of 20 students are as English language learners. The children's parents are unable to read or speak to their children in English. This limits books to be "read aloud" to them and language enhancement opportunities experienced through music. These are necessary to improve vocabulary, comprehension, and decoding skills. A CD/Cassette listening center is necessary to provide them with auditory books on a daily basis during Language Arts Centers. All students deserve to be read to daily. Having access to fine literature and language "modeling" is a prerequisite to experiential growth, language acquisition and improved writing skills. You can make books and music come alive, and improve their lives forever!
