My Students

I am a speech-language pathologist working in an urban school, serving students from PreK through 4th grade. All the children I work with have a variety of strengths and needs on the autism spectrum. My students are from diverse backgrounds; including rich cultures and different socioeconomic statuses.

My students love to interact with books and text!

Their love of books is an opportunity for me to engage with them and teach critical language skills. Some students are excellent readers, some are engaged by the illustrations, and some still are intrigued just by the print alone. Needless to say, books are an integral part of their learning.

My Project

Literacy based intervention is an evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology, and books are an integral part of my work with all my students. In trying to individualize my work with kids it is imperative to have a wide variety of choices in order to engage their wide variety of interests. In trying to build my library, I focused on choosing books with characters and settings that reflect, celebrate, and teach about the differences that are part of my students' lives. Additionally, I have selected books that I can use to teach social-emotional strategies, another critical skill for my students.

Kids need to see characters in books that look like them!

I have selected texts that can be a model, a context, and a source of inspiration for language intervention lesson plans. I create a variety of visual aids and supports related to each book to enrich their learning, and having an accessible laminator and velcro is critical in my work.
