My Project

These books and composition notebooks will give my students a chance to develop their writing and engage deeply with a meaningful story about hope and transformation. My students are burgeoning young adults ranging from 17-19 years old. They are all from underserved Philadelphia neighborhoods and find themselves many grade-levels behind in reading and writing as they approach graduation. It is a crucial time in life to develop the skills to reflect on who they are and who they want to become.

The donations to this project will open my students' minds to the world around them and the world in themselves.

A Man Called Ove is about finding commonality with someone not like oneself. At this age, my students are used to being around peers that are mostly like them. This book will help them to understand that even if someone comes from a completely different background, there is still hope for love and connection.

We will use the composition notebooks each class period for journaling. They will practice writing in order to find their authentic voice and reflect on what is ahead of them. My hope is that my students will be able to find small but significant moments of clarity within the pages of their senior year journals.
