My Students

My students are voracious readers. The only thing they love more than reading is talking about reading. As soon as I open my door in the morning, my students come up to me with their books in hand and ask me, "Mr. L., guess what chapter I'm on?" or "Mr L., did you get to the part where..." They read 20 minutes a day at school for silent reading, but I know they would read all day if I let them!

My Project

My students are constantly on the lookout for a great book series to read. School only started a month ago, and many of them have already torn through The Notebook of Doom, Bad Guys, and Dragon Masters. Not all of my students, though. I recently noticed that many of the girls in class tried these books and lost interest.

There are plenty of great books out there with strong, diverse, and interesting female characters.

My goal is to re-energize my classroom library by adding and featuring some of these books.

I recently asked my students what books they would like to read and have added these to our list: Ada Twist Scientist, The Babysitter's Club, Malala's Magic Pencil, and more. The books we have chosen feature engineers, princesses, and activists, from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.

Please help us diversify our library! Students deserve to see themselves represented in the books they read.
