Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a class of 24 creative third graders that love to learn about the world. I have 8 English Language Learners and 3 students with special needs. We are all learning how to be compassionate toward one another and how to support each other as students and people. I am with my students all day and teach them all of the core subjects (reading, writing, math, science, social studies, etc.)

One of their favorite times of day is read aloud, when they can get lost in a fictional story or learn new and interesting information from a non-fiction book.

I am trying to stock my library with engaging books about empathy, compassion, and cultural diversity to share with them during that time. I am also seeking a few materials to support my students with special needs and those who need more outlets for creative expression.

My Project

We need to build tolerance and empathy in order to get along. We also need to feel empowered by understanding our personal and collective histories. Books that build character will help my students become more compassionate and emotionally intelligent. Culturally relevant books will allow them to see themselves in history and understand where they come from.

Students with special needs and social-emotional needs require extra support and care.

They need various ways to feel successful, outside of the traditional structures. The wobble cushions will help some of my students with ADHD stay focused while they work, and the lego simple machine set will motivate students to get their work done and earn time to be creative and play.
