Have you ever heard a child read aloud and stumble over words or not know where to pause? Help prevent this by nurturing students' fluency with audio books. Neuman, Copple, and Bredekamp (2000) found that hearing fluently read text is the single most important activity for reading success.
My fourth grade students represent a wide range of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
Students speak five different languages. An important component of literacy instruction for all students, but particularly English Language Learners, is a focus on vocabulary and fluency, which listening to reading helps nurture. However, not all students have the opportunity to hear books read aloud to them, the use of audio books helps increase the time spent listening to fluently read text.
My Project
The six MP3 players will be utilized during our literacy block. Students will be able to use the players to listen to various audio books. There are a number of benefits to listening to reading:
*Students can listen on a higher language level than they can read, so hearing books makes complex ideas more accessible to students and exposes them to vocabulary and language patterns that are not part of their everyday speech.
*The reader's pauses and emphases allow students to better understand the phrasing and fluency of the language and to hear new vocabulary and the way the words are used (Fountas and Pinnell 1996).
The number of students who can currently engage in listen to reading on a daily basis is very few since we are limited to the 3 desktop computers in the classroom.
However, with your donation, you can help ensure that all students will have an opportunity to hear fluently read text on a regular basis.
