My Students

Since we are located near two military bases, many of my sixth grade students are the children of deployed military personnel. They live in an area that is a pocket of poverty and they are handicapped by a lack of resources. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Our school is an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago. As a result, the majority of my students do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.

I have a very transient student population and a number of my students are homeless or live in shelters.

Over 50% of my class comes and goes during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. Our school is not a Title I School, but my students have needs that are not being met by our school.

My Project

“This was the secret of America: a nation of people with the fresh memory of old traditions who dared to explore new frontiers, people eager to build lives for themselves in a spacious society that did not restrict their freedom of choice and action.” —John F. Kennedy, A Nation of Immigrants

My sixth graders live in a nation of immigrants, some of them have recently arrived in this country, others know someone who immigrated to this country but all of them need to understand the debate about immigration.

Most of my kids have heard about the wall that Donald Trump wants to build between the U.S. and Mexico. Or the proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States. Maybe they know someone who recently immigrated to the U.S. — and who is struggling to fit in.

I am asking for copies of forty-three assorted fiction and nonfiction books about immigration so that I can create a contemporary unit on 21st century problems.

I plan to create research/literature circles and divide my class into small group of students. Each of the groups will be reading a different book(s) based on their reading level. They will have class time to read alone, with a partner, or with audio support. Then they will respond to a Journal Prompt in writing and discuss their response with their group.

My students need current, thought provoking books on a variety of reading levels and our school can't afford to supply them. Please help!
