My Students

My students are the most resilient group of 3rd-5th graders. Each day they are eager about coming to school, despite their individual disabilities that tend to impact their learning. Their diligence with school related tasks, both academically and socially, have me in awe each day that we interact.

We just completed our middle of the year reading assessments and I'm pleased to say that we are moving up!

Students have become more interested in reading independently and are now able to answer comprehension questions and write summaries based on what they read. It's truly a joy to see! While we have a nice collection of books in our classroom library, we are in need of books that represent the population of my students. Books that will also show the diversity among literature that exists in the world. We are also in need of updated books that reflect the wide range of student interest. With my students showing a huge interest, and improvement with reading, I want to keep the momentum going!

My Project

It's been a few years since I have had new classroom library books. While the books that we have are engaging, I know that there are more topics and content that is related to student interests. For my students, they don't have many options of reading books with characters similar to them. So I've chosen a variety of books that speak to topics such as hair, self-acceptance and embracing one's diversity. Books such as Sulwe, Hair Love, and Skin Like Mine are sure to get the job done.

Graphic novels are of huge interest to my students.

That, and the recent Minecraft takeover. In an effort to promote reading, I was able to combine the two by choosing books that incorporate both. The Minecraft graphic novel series along with March will continue to engage my students in the reading process while providing them with knowledge of their history and entertainment.

From topics such as hair, self-acceptance, and career choices, my students will have an opportunity to interact with books that they never new existed, but that they needed. The books chosen will allow the doors to be open to actually visioning themselves as being able to do great things. For example, the leaders that are highlighted in Vashti Harrison's Boxed Set on Leaders will inspire students in knowing that they can be anything they want to with effort and patience.

Funding this project will allow students to continue to make gains in reading while providing them with quality books. We're hoping that you will be able to add to our classroom library!
