My Project

My students are wonderful storytellers! They deserve to know how important their lives and experiences are. Using inspiration from Storycorps animated shorts, award-winning Graphic Memoirs, and the Book Art Fair, students will create graphic memoirs based on their own lives and using the materials that you help to provide. Students will listen to Storycorps animated shorts and read incredible graphic memoirs such as Fun Home, Dragon Hoops, March, and Persepolis. They will analyze these stories by identifying the author's use of details, dialogue, symbolism, and artistic techniques. All the while, students will be thinking of meaningful moments in their own lives which could make compelling memoirs.

Once students have identified a story (or stories) that illustrate important moments in their own lives, they will write these stories, accompanied by powerful imagery, and bind the pages using techniques that they learn from Art Book experts.

We'll visit venues such as the The Center for Books Arts, which will show students new and ancient skills in bookmaking. Their teaching artists will help students to brainstorm ways in which they can craft their books using ideas from their writing. We will seek the support of small book publishers like Childish Books, which helps to publish books made by and for children. Finally, students will plan and implement a school-wide book fair, where they will display their graphic memoirs and engage the entire student body in a dialogue about the importance of storytelling.

Our long-term goal will be to participate as a school in the annual NY Art Book Fair in Manhattan. The funding that you donate for these supplies may inspire a future author or illustrator. We hope that you'll help us to reach out goal!
