My Students

Books. Students “hate” them, but do they really? Of course not! Our High School is one of the largest schools in our County. It is known for excelling in sports and academics, but how can we continue if our primary tools for teaching are falling apart? Our students deserve better.

My classroom consists of roughly 30 students per class.

These students come from many different socioeconomic classes, different races, some ESL, and a majority on free and reduced lunch. These students have one thing in common - their need for knowledge. Investing in novels for the classroom will help quench the thirst of ALL students that take English classes at our school and help further their education.

My Project

We were fully funded in our requests for The Great Gatsby, Passing, and Pride and Prejudice! We are excited for such support, especially since we did not believe we would receive those funds this semester - let alone in a day! Again, thank you to our donors and those that shared the post. With some of the monies left over, we compiled a complete list of texts that are needed to complete our library of novels, which are our primary teaching tools.

My High School is the largest high school in the Burke County School District; Freedom serves over 1200 with roughly 36% minority enrollment and roughly 50% on free and reduced lunch.

Some of the novels we use in the English department are over 10 years old and are falling apart.

With the funding, we will replace our battered copies of Toni Morrison's Beloved (6 copies), Cormac McCarthy's The Road (10 copies), Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None (5 copies), and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (15 copies).

We also want to invest in class sets (30 copies) of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier; Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood; and Every Falling Star. These sets will allow us to teach new texts, especially informational texts, that are engaging and high-interest to students.

Finally, we would like to invest in El gran Gatsby (The Great Gatsby - 5 copies), Romeo y Julieta (Romeo and Juliet - 5 copies), De ratones y hombres (Of Mice and Men - 5 copies), Matar a un ruisenor (To Kill a Mockingbird - 5 copies), and El que diran (Sticks and Stones- 5 copies). These books would allow us to adequately meet the needs of our growing ESL population.
