My Students

In J.K. Rowling's "Chamber of Secrets," Dumbledore advised Harry that, "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." I have this quote displayed in my classroom as a reminder that kindness, hard work, and persistence are all choices that shape who my students are as learners and individuals. I work at a gifted and talented school in East Harlem where my students are incredibly bright and motivated, and I believe it is my role as a teacher to guide them towards making choices in life that will foster a positive learning and social environment for all.

My students come from all five boroughs of New York City, and we are one of the most diverse gifted programs in the city in terms of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background.

My students all are greatly passionate about education and have big dreams to pursue careers in engineering, law, education, medicine, and politics; they are the next generation of leaders and changemakers! To get them there, we need your help in acquiring the 21st century tools that will help them develop the skills they need for success in middle school and beyond.

My Project

My students love to read; on a daily basis, there is always at least one student I have to tell to stop reading as they walk in the hallway for safety's sake. I always do so by encouraging their love for reading and remarking on how it's something we share--but nonetheless, they need to watch out for other students in the hall!

These books will add greater diversity and variety to our classroom library; they are more popular titles that both align to our curriculum and represent diverse perspectives on American history and the modern-day American experience.

Some of these books, particularly those on Native American mythology and Reconstruction, will be used directly in lessons. Others are intended for students to dive deeper into the curriculum and history independently in order to nurture their own historical interests. Each book, however, will be greatly loved and appreciated by my students, and I am hoping you can help us revamp our library.
