This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school that sits in the heart of Washington, DC. I have a group of 67 students who are fun loving, eager-to-learn new things, excited about school and love to read. My classroom would be considered a melting pot of cultural heritage and social needs. Many of my students have been in the U.S. less than 4 years. They inspire me every day.
To meet their needs, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
My students will check out books much like a library. They have their favorite options in my very own classroom. I take classroom polls before requesting books in an attempt to select the most popular books for my students to check out and have available. We would very much appreciate optional reading materials in our classroom!
Having extra reading options in my classroom will allow me to encourage a lifelong love of reading for my students!
Oftentimes, many of my students' favorite selections are unavailable in the school or public library. In an effort to support my students, I've learned that I must first provide interesting books in our own classroom! My goal is to find at least one interesting book for my students to independently read throughout each school year.
