Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are creative, passionate, and curious. We serve a diverse population and are part of a diversity pilot project in NYC. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix because we believe that integration and equal access benefit everyone. Students with special learning needs are fully integrated into the classroom, and everyone's learning benefits as a result. This year, we are doing a combination of remote learning and blended learning. That means some kids are learning fully from home and others are coming into school a few days a week.

This year, our class is a curious and lovable bunch: 35 joyful kids who love to learn and explore, whether in-school or remote.

Anything they hear or read about, they want to know more. They have a wide range of learning needs and I want to make learning fully accessible to each and every one of them! Many of my students are spending more time indoors, with their families, and I want to create exciting learning experiences that bring the world to their living room.

My Project

The fun continues! It has been 6 months since most of my students were able to check books out from our school library, and just as long since they browsed the classroom library. They are at risk of turning into Zoombies from too much screentime and are hungry for good old-fashioned (paper) books. Our teaching trio has decided to set up Operation Book Tote to solve this problem.

With the help of volunteers to do deliveries, we will send each student a tote bag full of books from our classroom library-- enough to keep them reading for two weeks or longer until we can swap books out.

Our kids have filled out questionnaires with their book preferences, and we have made ourselves lists of what to pack in each of the 35 bags. The only problem is... how can our classroom library sustain such a giant book drop? 12 books per bag, times 35 students...that's a lot of books! Please help us get these kids the reading material that will light up their day, allow them to step back from the blue glow of their devices, and bring about an Off-screen Reading Revival in the fourth grade!
