My school is located in Brooklyn, New York. Even though the school is located in an urban setting, it has a small, close-knit community feel.
Children here come from many different countries, speak different languages, and practice different religions.
Although they come from many different backgrounds, they are all encouraged to come together as a learning community in which everyone supports each other. Students learn to be self-directed in their learning by choosing the books that they want to read, choosing the topics that they want to write about, and choosing the math game they want to play with their partner for the day.
My Project
Do you remember reading books like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" as a child? Children love to listen to these books. Unfortunately, there are not enough copies of the best books for all the children who want them. With extra copies, children can practice reading the books on their own. They can take them home to their families to be read to at home.
Repeated exposure to these old favorites will help my students acquire the critical early literacy skills they will need to build a foundation as life-long readers.
Every time they re-read best loved books with a family member, they practice skills such as using their story telling voice and attending to pictures.
