My students are excited about learning! They love new opportunities and the chance to experience new things. They are very respectful students who come to school every day excited about what they will learn. They learn best when incorporating manipulative for hands-on learning experiences.
My school is in a low income area, where over 70% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Many students do not have access to computers at home. I love presenting them with opportunities to use technology and learn new things because they truly enjoy every minute of it. Their smiles and motivation to be the best they can be is my inspiration and my reason for teaching.
My Project
I have been collecting books this summer for my new classroom. With a decent size library being built I started thinking about how to get students engaged in reading. I want my students to become avid readers that discuss books and make suggestions for one another.
“Creativity is the key to engagement.
Engagement is the magic fairy dust that makes kids want to come to school.” Hope and Wade King
Hope King is known for her classroom transformations! I have done a few transformations in my classroom and the kids are instantly engaged! Students still talk about those days as being a lot of fun! My little secret is that they also learned a lot on those days! There was challenging content and a lot of it, but they were still having fun!
I want to use a room transformation, specifically a cafe style, for engaging students in new books. Once a month our classroom will turn into a cafe. Tables will be set up with flowers, fake candles, and table cards. Music will be playing to help set the atmosphere! At each place will be a book and the menu that goes with the book. Students will have an opportunity to preview (or taste) the books and make a list of books they would like to read. Each menu will include reviews of students who have already read the book and a recommendation for who would enjoy the book.
I have started making menus from my summer reading list so the students can get started with their first book tasting early in the school year. My goal is that the students will eventually take over creating the menus, making book recommendations for their peers.
I’m looking forward to stepping into our reading cafe soon!
