My Students

Our theme this year is Blast off to reading success!, but we need books to make this goal a reality!

My kids are from a low income neighborhood here in Texas.

They are awesome kids, but they come from pretty troubled backgrounds. I have a lot of refugees in my class too, mostly from Sudan and Iraq. It has been a lot of fun to teach them. This neighborhood where they live, though, is not a good hood. It is a first-stop for a lot of refugees, but also a neighborhood with a lot of gangs and trouble. The graduation rate from our neighborhood is really low, and I'm just trying to set them on a good path while they're young.

My Project

I am requesting three book sets at this time. The first is "The Hundred Dresses", the second is "Stone Fox" and the third is "Catwings". All of these books are classics and should provide a good expansion of our book collections. We don't have too many at present. I am excited to share these books with them as a whole group, reading the books, diving into the vocabulary, practicing our fluency, and really honing in on our comprehension skills.

You know, I have seen first hand over the last two years that the achievement gap really is a literacy gap.

If my kids don't have anything to read, I can't teach them! These books will really be a great benefit to them. Thanks for considering this project!
