My Students

The children in my class live in a high poverty community. Many of them are refugees whose families have escaped their homelands in search of a better life in the U.S.A. Most all of my students are English language learners. Some do not speak any English at all when they enter through my doorway. For some of my students, this is the first time that they have ever been enrolled in school.

They may come from all over the world, but one thing that my students have in common is that they love coming to school each day.

My classroom provides a safe and happy environment in contrast to the challenges that my students and their families endure daily. Many of them have expressed that they would rather be at school than at home.

My Project

The students in my class are beginning their journeys into independent reading and desire to read beginning chapter books, especially series collections. Whether I read to my students aloud, or the students read independently, they are becoming motivated by the characters in the stories. Book series, such as the 24 book collection of Henry and Mudge, offer a continuation of the characters in new situations. The children become elated when they discover new books about familiar characters motivating them to continue to read collections of books. I love to listen to their conversations as they discuss the books in a series that they are reading. Having sets of beginning books including the 17 book series of Mr. Putter and Tabby, the 10 book collection of Young Cam Jansen, and the 14 book series of Katie Woo, easily available in my classroom, would make a huge impact on encouraging my students' love for reading. The 9 sets of series book collections will offer over 100 quality stories for my students to select. With your support, it will be a blissful reading experience in my classroom.
