My Students

My students are 6th grade ASD students in an 8-1-1 classroom. Some are mainstreamed for math, and one student receives both math and ELA in an ICT classroom.

The students are the group that every teacher wished they had.

They are eager to learn, accept the challenge of a rigorous academic environment, and have never missed a day of school. They struggle with understanding social cues and social interaction.

One student attends language school in the evening and on the weekends. She speaks 3 languages. Another student loves to draw; he spends every free moment drawing and hopes to become an animator. One student desires a career as an engineer. All of them love to read! However, I do not have a variety of books to satisfy their diverse interests, and we need books for the next unit of ELA.

My Project

The color printer and replacement ink cartridges will be a fabulous resource to our ASD classroom. Its use will show the brilliant work my students create in a visually appealing and digitally contemporary manner.

Students are currently working on one of two book-making assignments.

The first is on Ancient Egypt for social studies. They are researching the history, geography, artifacts, and pyramids to create an engaging historical book with pictures and artwork that will help the reader travel back in time.

The book-making project will have cross-curricular activities with science. Students will conduct a mini lab on force to understand how the pyramids were built, and their findings will result in a lab report. A color printer will showcase and celebrate the artwork and pictures in their books and fill the students with pride.

Beyond this assignment, the printer will receive ample use for cover pages, map creation, artwork, and other project-based learning activities. A color printer will ensure that my students will no longer live in a digital divide; they will become true digital natives!
