My Students

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." ~Jacqueline Kennedy Have you ever wanted to join a book club, but you were number 9,999 on the wait list at the library and the book was too expensive to purchase yourself?

This year I have a class of 26 students who have a wide range of academic abilities and prior knowledge.

They are a diverse group socio-economically and culturally. We have added an additional class to our grade level this year, so it is important that each student has his/her own book to follow along to promote equity in all classrooms.

My Project

With these books our students will have the opportunity to participate in literature circles that will instill a love a books, as well as challenge our students' brains to think beyond what is obvious. We will read together in small groups to share the connections we observe between ourselves and the book, between this book and other books, and between the book and the world around us. We will increase vocabulary as well as take note of the author's use of descriptive language. We will begin the year modeling the process with shorter picture books, eventually advancing to short chapter books. Throughout the year we will also explore some non-fiction.

Most children eventually learn to read.

It is important, however, to begin to teach them the tools of critical thinking now so that they can make maximum use of the content of their reading. With this method, we can teach children to be independent readers and thinkers beyond the obvious, using their personal connections to guide them. The opportunity presented by these resources is exhilarating. I look forward to reading exciting, interesting novels with all the students in our grade level
