My Students

I teach a diverse and energetic group of 8th graders who thrive on engaging, visual, hands-on and meaningful learning activities. They are SO excited to be back in the classroom after a year and a half of virtual learning! They love listening to music, playing games, and collaborating with each other. They care about equity, their identity, and sharing ideas. While they are eager to write about their experiences and share their opinions, they often struggle to find a book they can connect with and that they want to finish. Once they do find a book they love and they finish it, they ask me for another book just like it. This is my chance to get them firmly into the reading habit.

Imagine seeing a lively group of 8th graders rush loudly into the room, excited to take out their books and read; without any prompting, they settle into their books, and the room is silent.

This is what happens when my students can choose the books they want to read. In fact, rather than finding excuses and stalling, they end up asking for more reading time!

My Project

After a year and a half of reading books online, my 8th graders are so excited to finally read books they can hold! My goal is for students to re-discover the pleasure of reading this year. There are many excellent reasons to encourage reading for my students as they head off to high school. Reading widely and often is the best way to improve vocabulary, learn strong writing skills, and improve comprehension. But perhaps the best benefit, especially in these times, is that students can use books as both mirrors and windows, where they can see themselves in the pages and also learn about others. I can think of no better way to nurture my students' self-confidence, identity, and awareness of the world than to provide an assortment of books they can't wait to read.

The books I am requesting have diverse characters, suspense, humor, and life lessons; they are the the titles my students request and then recommend to their classmates.

With this collection of books, I will be able to quickly respond when students ask me for more books just like the one they have finished. For instance, my students love reading books about middle school friends dealing with conflicts and problem, so I am eager to hand them the next book in the Click series. For students who are inspired by teens overcoming struggles, I can suggest The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake. Your donations will make a huge difference in my classroom. There is nothing more rewarding for me than when I witness the confidence and joy of a student learning to enjoy reading. Thank you for your help in bringing books to my students.
