Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Over the years I have noticed that book clubs are a great way to get fifth graders excited about reading. They are motivated to meet and discuss books with their peers and look forward to assigning pages to read for their next session as well as suggesting upcoming titles to read.

Reluctant readers show a greater willingness to read if they are in book clubs with their peers and the books are centered around social justice themes.

This provides some students with mirrors to see themselves in books and windows to see others, developing compassion along the way.

So much of our learning is done through discourse and books clubs facilitate conversations among peers around the big and little things in life. Big things, such as themes around assimilation, family, identity, and human triumph, but also around details which incapsulate the specificity of the human experience, making it universal.
