My Students

My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.There are students who have fled war-torn countries such as the Ukraine, Russia and Israel to first generation Mexican-Americans, to students dealing with Asperger's, a myriad of learning disabilities and students who may also be in advanced stages of disease.

Through all their struggles and anxiety, they are extremely resilient and come to school every day with hopes of a better future.

Many are new to reading. Often they'll tell me they haven't read a complete book since they were in elementary school.

My Project

In these texts and during class discussions around the books, students will examine and write about social justice issues. Students will examine: Whose voice is heard? Whose voice is missing? These books represent a range of complexity in both length of text as well as a depth of ideas. For my classes, students will choose two of these books and bring their insights to their book clubs. The readings will also give students greater insight into people who struggle with racial inequality, immigration, and characters who wrestle with mental illness. This is a unique opportunity for students to read such texts.
