My Students

My students are juniors and seniors who need to be reintroduced to a love of reading. While they are very good at passing tests and looking up answers on SparkNotes, they haven't been reading and many have lost the joy in it.

Last year, we had a class discussion and they shared with me that they are not motivated to read books that are over 50-years old about adults and situations to which they can't relate.

In conjunction with this conversation, I attended a conference led by educator, Penny Kittle. She provides a different way of teaching, offering students more choice, and cultivates a love of reading. I'm inspired and I would love to develop my own classroom library.

My Project

Having multiple copies of a book allows peer pressure to work in a positive way! When small groups of students chose a book and read together, the classroom is student-centered and they become the experts on the text.

New titles that are not featured on SparkNotes allow students to have their own opinions and interpretations.

They no longer feel wrong or silly because it doesn't match up with what the website says.

When the books are not being used for book clubs, students may also check them out for choice reading. So one copy may be read by multiple students throughout the year.
