Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, I want to give students the opportunity to decide what novel they read.

Students will have 7-10 culturally relevant novels to choose from; they will be placed in a book club with other students reading the same text.

Students will have the chance to read and discuss their thoughts and ideas with their groups as they make meaningful connections between the text and their lives. Students will exchange ideas with students from other groups as they discuss what they learned about the central theme of "identity."

Many of my students have expressed to me that they often avoid reading and don't usually like the books they are asked to read in class. Many of the books they are asked to read are outdated, irrelevant, and/or not something with which they feel connected. My hope is that giving students choice and the opportunity to connect with one another will give dormant readers a new outlook on reading.
