My Students

We are so busy teaching students HOW to read that we have stopped teaching them to LOVE reading. I want to foster a love of reading in my students!

I teach third grade in a low-income neighborhood where two-thirds of our students are recent immigrants.

They are bright and inquisitive, but do not always have a home environment that fosters and encourages intellectual growth. Most of their learning experiences take place within the school setting.

My Project

We have begun to read novels together in my classroom and the students love it! They enjoy sharing their thoughts about what they are reading and value the opinions and ideas of their classmates. I want to continue this rich reading experience, but lack the multiple copies of texts necessary to conduct book clubs.

Watching my students immersed in the reading of a novel and the sharing of ideas reaffirms my core belief of education - to foster informed, thoughtful, well-spoken citizens who will face the world outside school ready to make a difference.
