My Students

As many of you know, I recently cleaned out the classroom library in my new shared classroom. We realized we need to revamp our library collection for student use.

Our student body is comprised of primarily multicultural and dynamic young people, and they deserve to have the opportunity to be exposed to texts that reflect the dynamic culture of our school community, as well as the world around them.

As teachers, you find out quickly that students are more motivated and interested in reading when they can connect with texts that reflect who they are as individuals. Their uniqueness should be echoed in the texts they read, so as to continue to inspire and encourage their reading both inside and outside of the classroom, for years to come.

Nothing is more rewarding as a secondary ELA teacher than to see a normally unmotivated student return a book and say, with pride, "I finished THE WHOLE thing!" I hope to hear a lot more of that with this upcoming school year!

My Project

My thesis research begins in September, and the more access students have to diverse texts, the more reading choices they have for their independent reading!

Research and experience have proved to me that student choice in independent reading and book club activities are what really get students interested in texts, and, in order to encourage independent reading, contemporary and multicultural literature is a must!

By supplying students with more options for reading, they are more likely to become engaged and interested in the text itself as well as the activities we participate in within the classroom.

Book Clubs are an integral component to my classroom learning, and will be the focus of my thesis research for the 2019-2020 school year. The more access students have to interesting texts, the more success they will attain as readers and as learners!
