Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd graders are struggling readers, writers, and mathematicians. As their third grade teacher, I am not only preparing them for the ELA Exam in April and fourth grade, but providing them skills to succeed academically. My biggest challenge is that 50% are performing at 1st and 2nd grade levels.

My students are first generation immigrants whose parents and relatives are striving to accomplish the American Dream.

Aside from struggling with the language, my students struggle with family dynamics which include but are not limited to single parent households, domestic violence and mental illnesses such as depression. Although their home and academic circumstances are not the best, my students are eager to learn and succeed. They have academic and personal goals that they have set for themselves and are working towards achieving.

My Project

When these books arrive to our classroom, students will engage in book clubs. Through book clubs students will be able to take responsibility and be accountable for their own learning as they negotiate meaning and respond to the books through conversation and writing.

Book clubs not only improve students' academics, but they also help built community in the classroom.

Students will begin to value and appreciate each other as readers and learners. The knowledge, skills, and responsibility they will develop in literature will help them become life long learners!
