My Project

The curriculum my school uses for English Language Arts does not include longer works of fiction, in other words, students do not get to enjoy or study novels.

Short stories are wonderful, but a longer work of fiction greatly benefits students because it allows them to increase their attention span, and also study characterization, literary elements and themes in a much more meaningful way.

Due to this, about a year ago, I began a morning book club. The book club has been very successful! Three morning a week, we meet for 50 minutes and read aloud a classic or modern classic novel. Fostering a love for reading is probably one of the greatest gifts we can give students. I'd really like to be able to offer students a snack they could enjoy at lunch or after school to reward them for committing and consistently attending our book club.
