Book Club for Teens

Help me give my students the opportunity to read diverse books on a crucial topic: immigration. Students will use the books in their literature circles, where they will develop community and critical analysis.

My Students

Our school is located just south of Downtown Los Angeles. The pandemic has hit this community especially hard, and as such my students came back to the classroom last semester with heavy experiences on their teenage shoulders. They are smart, capable, and often very funny; however, they also have experienced an immense amount of trauma. In response to this trauma, I am doing my best to hold them to high standards while pivoting my instruction to meet them where they are. This has required flexibility and creativity, but I am continually impressed by my students and their growth this year.

My Project

In our classroom, students are used to reading one class novel, discussing that novel, and then writing an essay on that one novel provided by the school. There is little variety, choice, or opportunity for inquiry. These graphic novels will offer them the opportunity to explore the topic of our unit (immigration) in the book of their choice, while also supporting their social-emotional needs of being in community and practicing autonomy

After learning online for over a year, my students need more opportunities to discuss rich texts with their peers in an accessible manner.

Graphic novels provide that access to my English language learner students, my students with an IEP, and all struggling learners. For my more advanced students, diving into a book club will allow them the freedom to soar to new heights.

My students are worth the investment. I hope you'll help me show them this truth.
