Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very diverse and attend an NYC Public School located in the Bronx, NY. Many come from immigrant single-parent households and are faced with a host of challenges. I am proud to watch them grow and learn despite the many obstacles they face outside of the classroom.

Most of the students come from impoverished homes and lack many necessary resources that most families take for granted.

Unfortunately, research proves that there is a link between poor academic performance and poverty. Our school becomes their safe haven where they feel valued and respected.

My Project

5th-grade children love to read and discuss books especially narratives where they identify with the characters. These books are specifically geared toward this age group. Over the years my 5th graders always say that they especially love to read "Wonder", a popular favorite every year.

It will be special to gift each child with their own copy that will make class discussions more engaging and will allow them to bring books home to continue reading.

In the past, due to a lack of funding, students did not have books to keep. There is no greater gift than for students to own their favorite novels to read, reread, and dog-ear their favorite parts. Additionally, incorporating a variety of narratives with diverse characters will enhance our book club chats.
