Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I choose to come work at a "turnaround" school this year, where only 9.8% of the students were proficient in reading. I was selected as a Master teacher to help raise the literacy rates, and that is exactly what I have been doing thus far. Step number one was to get books my kids want to read.

My students are bright, capable kids who need to be inspired, motivated and above all else challenged.

They attend a public school in Brooklyn, NY that is endanger of closing if our test scores do not improve. I have worked tirelessly to begin to build a culture of readers. Four months in, and several hundred dollars of books later, I am proud to say that our students have become readers. They are so eager and enthusiastic that many come each day with a book to donate, or a new recommendation of a "good read" for a friend. In addition they research new books in various genres that they would like me to add to our classroom library. I promised and continue to work towards stocking an awesome classroom library that have books of all different interests and levels so that each student not only reads, but learns to love reading.

My Project

After moving to this school this year, I have worked very hard to create a rich literary culture in both my classroom and across the other ELA classrooms. These books are desperately needed to engage our struggling readers and to keep them motivated. These books will be read both in independent reading as well as in book clubs. Students will read them, discuss the themes, examine how they relate to their lives, and analyze issues that emerge from the novels through our classroom conversations as well as their weekly literary essays. These books will also be shared with various other ELA classrooms in order to maximize their use. Eventually our class will be creating a blog which will be centered around my current 8th graders recommending the top 25 "Must Read" books for the incoming 8th graders next year.

Every one of my students scored a 2 on the ELA test last year (this was before I moved to this school).

It is my goal that every one of my students score a high 3 or a 4 on the ELA exam. Our school's future depends on our ability to cultivate avid readers. The only way we will be able to succeed (both myself and more importantly, my students) is if they constantly have more challenging books available to read. Please help! It sounds silly, but we really just need great, challenging books!
