Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom will be home to two classes of 24-28 fifth graders, each with a big heart filled with curiosity and an enthusiastic drive to learn more. I know this because I taught this group of students during the 2016-2017 school year when they were third graders! My students are in a fifth-grade Math and Science classroom at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper NYC. Ninety-four percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and 30% are English Language Learners. Like most children, my students love having hands-on experiences and I want ALL of my students to be able to have access to their own personal learning needs!

Inspiring my students to learn with a hands-on, engaging environment is the mission in the classroom.

At the end of the year, I want my students to say, "This was the best year in math, ever!" My students deserve the best math education I can give them and I desire to be able to provide a mathematical education that will encourage my students to reach for the stars!

My Project

Classrooms in the 21st Century have provided a variety of seating options allowing students to be able to choose each day, and throughout each day, where they sit in the classroom. By getting rid of traditional desks, I have to find a new way for students to store their belongings. I am requesting a variety of book bins for students to be able to house their math and science notebooks, math binders, textbooks and any other classroom materials.

The book bins will help the classroom transition, as it will be the first thing students grab when they enter the classroom, before going to their flexible seating option they choose.

Book bins may seem simple, but would make a world of difference in these students' lives. Students perform better when they are comfortable and organized in their environment.
