This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A book, being a physical object, engenders a certain respect that zipping electrons can't. Because you can't turn a book off, because you have to hold it in your hands, because a book sits there, waiting for you, whether you think you want it or not, because of all these things, a book is a friend."

My students are avid learners who are devouring books left and right!

They are becoming excited and confident readers and have plowed through most of our early reader texts. Most of my students do not have any books or technology in their homes and therefore borrow from the class library every day. Despite the challenges of limited resources, low incomes, and being Special Education students, my students are determined children who never cease to surprise me.

My Project

Every day we practice reading to ourselves, reading to a friend, and listening to reading. The students choose "Just Right" books to be put into their books bins. Many students bring these books home each night to read because they do not have any books at home. But we are running out of "Just Right" books! These books will allow them to continue their daily reading practice with new and exciting books which will keep them engaged. Students will also be able to take some of the older books home for longer periods of time instead of having to return them each day.

My students have come so far and surpassed enormous obstacles in their short lives.

They have made great progress and I want to help them to continue this learning in school and at home.
