Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This semester, our lunch Book Club will be reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We are excited to have new members joining us this semester. Our goal is to create a space for students to read and engage with literature in a no-pressure, leisurely space that cultivates calm and community.

Our students struggle with literacy, so Book Club is meant to encourage them to expand their reading skills and create a stress-free environment to read and analyze a text in a low-stakes and recreational setting.

We aim to help anxious readers feel more comfortable practicing reading aloud and participating in fun literature discussions.

Our students unanimously voted to read The Outsiders this semester. We selected book-based snacks to align with our weekly readings. Popcorn and candy will immerse the students in the drive-in movie experience. We will eat chocolate cake and Swiss rolls with the Curtis brothers and drink Cherry Kool-Aid when Ms. Valance enters the scene. Goldfish and Goldbears will remind us to "stay gold". These snacks will fuel our reading and help students feel full and comfortable during our lunch meetings.
