Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is filled with reluctant readers who have not been introduced to the right characters or the story that grabs them and pulls them in. I work with them to find their interests and show them how they can use these interests to find books that they'll enjoy. Once they find one, they're in! They admit to not reading and often say they do not like to read in the beginning of the school year. It is my goal to have each of them end the school year as readers, not because someone told them they had to, but because they enjoy it.

We work all year to learn to grow from failure and use it to get a step closer to success.

Many of my students come to me with a sense of apathy formed from the lack of experiences of academic success in the past. Our school is a Title I school with more than 80% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged including some who are experiencing homelessness. (ATPE Teacher)

My Project

Picture books are a great resources for read alouds at all grade levels. I picked books that have relevant topics and interesting subjects to engage my students in beneficial reading strategies for English Language Learners. Because of the short length, picture books are less intimidating and allow students to experience the content without becoming overwhelmed or discouraged. The specific books that I chose for this project all deal with some experience that my students can relate to and offers realistic solutions that can be applied to help them overcome adversity.

Read alouds are a great way to model fluency and allow ESL students to visualize the story without the worry or embarrassment of not being able to recognize or pronounce the words.

My students will get a chance to hear me read with influx and expression and later practice reading the same way. They will also get the chance to enjoy the story and analyze literary elements while listening.
