My Students

I work with one of the most creative and bright groups of third graders that our city has to offer. My students come from a variety of backgrounds; within my class alone, I have representation from 5 countries around the world! Because we are located in the heart of an urban area, my students also come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, even though they all live in the same zip code. Because my school is Title I, many of my students face poverty at home and make a great effort to come to school each day.

While they are diverse in every sense of the word, the one thing my kiddos have in common is that they truly love to learn.

In our classroom, students drive their own inquiries and ask questions about the world on a daily basis. They continuously wonder about topics from mathematics to reading to world cultures, and I do my best to foster their curiosity. Research is a skill especially important to my third graders as they build their independence as learners, and I am hoping to help them grow through a variety of research-driven projects this year.

My Project

One of the most enjoyable and engaging units for our third graders is our unit on the human body, health, and wellness. What students really love about this unit is that what they're learning applies to their entire lives every day. From their muscles and bones needed for running at recess to their mouths and stomachs needed for eating lunch, the systems of the body are constantly at work.

To help my students better understand these complex systems, we need literature on the topic, as well as accurate 3-D models.

With these resources, my students will be able to read about and manipulate models that demonstrate how our bodies work. Many of my students learn through hands-on activities, and with these models I will be able to give them those experiences. I know that with these classroom materials, my students would be so engaged and motivated to learn about what makes us tick... from the inside!
