Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school in Hialeah, Florida and my school receives Title I funding because over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and our community is made up of low-income families; However, don't feel sorry for me or my students because although our pockets may not be full, our hearts certainly are. We are a loving family, but every family needs a little help sometimes.

Our students are the best; they are kind, humble and dedicated to the betterment of the school and each other.

To that end, many of them take part in clubs and organizations outside of the regular, school day. One such organization is called "Teen Trendsetters" that will serve to pair up students in an attempt to improve literacy skills, while developing an appreciation and love of reading at the same time.

My Project

An after-school reading program where partners will meet once a week from now until the end of the school year and read together, practice fluency, review reading strategies and key vocabulary aimed at improving literacy skills. Snacks will be need to be provided, as this is an after-school initiative. During the first five minutes of their weekly meetings, students will have the opportunity to eat a snack in preparation for a lengthy, hour long reading session that will ensue. The snacks requested will provide the necessary energy that

Students will need snacks to fuel them throughout the program and I am counting on the generous contributions of donors, to help me provide these invigorate these amazing students.
