Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school in Hialeah, Florida and my school receives Title I funding because over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and our community is made up of low-income families; However, don't feel sorry for me or my students because although our pockets may not be full, our hearts certainly are. We are a loving family, but sometimes families need a little help.

The students in my class are struggling readers whose first language is not English; our school has a high immigrant population.

Next year, I will be teaching two reading classes that will require novels and although in the past, I have purchased sets of novels myself, it has of late become an expensive venture. Furthermore, I do not wish to place the burden of purchasing novels on my students who already struggle financially, so I am turning to donors like you for help. I am only requesting a class set of novels for students to utilize during the course of the school year.

My Project

Joseph Brodsky once declared, "There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them." As a teacher, I try to find novels that my students will relate to and I feel that as educators, we need to provide our students with classroom experiences that provide pupils with the opportunity to not only read books but equally important connect with text, explore deeper meanings and insights that will lead to significant and lasting bonds with books.

The goal of the project is to expose struggling readers to literature and help them improve fluency and expand their reading comprehension skills in the process.

For many students, this will be the first novel that they read in its entirety. Your donation will allow the students in my reading class to read a novel about teenagers coming-of-age who are bridging the gap between the new world that they have come into and the world that they have left behind.

It is crucial that students see themselves represented in the stories that they read; this allows the text to be relevant. The conflict presented in the novel is one that my reading students know all too well because many of them have immigrated to this country from a foreign land and struggle to find ways of assimilating without betraying their culture and previous way of life.
