This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Please help us enhance the therapy room at our school! Many of our students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), have difficulties performing age appropriate tasks that require core/postural strength, fine-motor control, coordinating movements between the left and right side of the body, hand-eye coordination, as well as planning a series of movements or gestures, known as praxis.

Core/postural strength is necessary to complete almost any activity.

With a strong base of support in the trunk, the arms and legs are free to move with control. Without this strength our students may fatigue quickly sitting or standing up. This can impact their ability to write, pay attention, engage in activities of daily living, including self care, vocational tasks, leisure and fitness routines. The flexor muscles allow for flexion of the stomach and shoulders in toward the body and the extensors allow for straighter posture with the head held up, shoulders back and trunk straight. There must be a good balance between theses muscles to provide trunk stability. The extensor muscles tend to be much weaker, preventing our students from adequately sitting well and for any length of time. To improve trunk stability it is necessary to improve the extensor tone in the trunk and develop good stability between the flexors and extensors.

Tumble Form Bolster Rolls are adaptive positioning shapes that are used to create postural challenges during therapy. Rolls are most suitable for balance, extension exercises, forearm and hand control, coordination training, and the practice of weight bearing. Both dynamic and static use help improve muscle tone, range of motion, and perceptual skills.
