Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach an extraordinary group of 12 first grade through third grade Special Education students with a multitude of learning disabilities. I teach all three grade levels in all subject areas. All of my students receive Occupational Therapy for sensory-motor dysfunctions. I work closely with the OT to come up with ways to improve their sensory-motor systems so that they can maintain focus on their schoolwork and take in the information that is coming at them. One area that my students have difficulty with is spatial awareness: understanding where their body is in space. This leads to difficulty staying in their seat and even understanding where words are on a page, making reading and writing difficult. One tool that helps my students in this area is a "body sock." It is just that: a body size sock made of stretchy lycra material. "Body Sox" are designed specifically for spatial awareness through balance and resistance. Students climb in the body sock and stretch while lying on the floor. This activity helps the brain communicate with the body, an ability most of us take for granted. Spending just five minutes in a body sock first thing in the morning increases my students ability to stay in their seat and take in information. Suddenly the brain is able to communicate movements to the body. It improves their spatial awareness making it easier for them to learn to read and write. Throughout the day, as focus wanes, they can slide back into the body sock and get back on track.
