Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am a speech therapist working in a District 75 special needs public school in Brooklyn, serving middle school students. All of our students have special needs, ranging from diagnoses of autism, intellectual disabilities, and severe emotional needs that make learning in a typical classroom difficult. Three-quarters of our student population comes from low-income households and most qualify for free school lunch.
Our student population is very mixed, and within a diagnosis so are their abilities and needs.
Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.
I am hoping to make our classroom library much more inclusive and representative for all of my students. I want to update our library to encompass books having to do with body positivity, celebrating our differences, a more inclusive LGBTQ+ and gender expansive library, and also books talking about consent.
The books chosen help to broaden students' exposure to different types of characters, characters that represent themselves more and more. These books have been curated to include wonderful texts that tell lovely stories with LGBTQ+ characters and experiences. We need more recent and accessible books to help our classroom become much more inclusive.
More than half of students from low‑income households
