Boards and Stones for Healthy Living

Help me give my students a grinder, various sized hammers, sanding blocks, and sanding paper to engage in the traditional practice of growing kalo (taro) and making poi boards and pounders.

My Students

Being brought up in a place where pioneer groups of Polynesians settled, my students are immersed in an environment and culture that still values traditional practices such as malama 'aina (caring for the land, ocean, and air), and ola kino (healthy lifestyle choices).

However, there is a need for more support to aid this community so that they can participate in activities that promote traditional, and more importantly, healthful practices.

My students are strong, able bodied, proud members of this community, and their understanding of these things will make a difference in the present and future generations of this place.

My Project

The intention of this project is to provide students and their families, as well as our internal school community, many opportunities to perpetuate and practice ola kino, or practices that bring life to one's body.

The unity between mind, body, and spirit is enduring, and this project is just one way to maintain the knowledge and foresight of a once flourishing Polynesian people.

Over the course of the year, students immersed in this project will work collaboratively with their peers in order to complete sets of boards and stones to be preserved and used for school and community events. As a follow up to a school-community event held last school year where we started a kalo (taro) garden, students and their families will have the opportunity to use the final products to learn and pound their own kalo for consumption.

A sense of satisfaction and pride, 'ohana and community, and a love for learning enduring social studies, science, language arts, and health content make this project so important in this particular place.
