Board Games for Education

My students need European-style board games to provide supplementary math, economics, history and life skills.

My Students

Remember interacting with board games as a child? Remember the human interactions that come with sitting down with your friends or family for a game night? I want to help students at my school unplug and connect with their peers in a constructive, educational way.

I teach a diverse group of students in a near-urban suburb of Denver, Colorado.

Students range from impacted low-income to upper middle class. I have several students that are gifted and other who have special needs. A large minority of my students are second language learners. In my school there are immigrants from Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East and Africa. My school is also a center for gifted and talented students.

My Project

My hope is to use the games to create an after school program for 5th and 6th graders. I want to help students to improve their socialization, reduce their "screen time" and to learn mathematics, economics, history and strategic thinking. German-style board games are less antagonistic than typical classic board games. Carcassonne Classic, The Settlers of Catan, Ticket To Ride and Puerto Rico are deep thinking games. I want 5th and 6th grade students to learn deep thinking skills.

Many of my students are impacted by having unstructured time between when school ends and when their parents come home.

I would like the opportunity to coach and guide these students after school in a games club. My hope is that this will foster a community at my school and give my students a love of board games that will last them a lifetime.
