Board Games for Education III: Return of the Strategy

My students need new games for our Advanced Board Games club, including legacy games like Seafall and educational science games like Evolution.

My Students

Remember interacting with board games as a child? Remember the human interactions that come with sitting down with your friends or family for a game night? I want to help students at my school unplug and connect with their peers in a constructive, educational way.

Students range from impacted low-income to upper middle class.

I have several students that are gifted and others who have special needs. A large minority of my students are second language learners. In my school there are immigrants from Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa. My school is also a center for gifted and talented students.

My Project

I previously created an after school board games club with donations from DonorsChoose.org. I hope to add to the games and increase participation for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. The goal is to help students improve their socialization, reduce their "screen time" and learn mathematics, economics, history, science and strategic thinking. I have included several "legacy" style board games like Seafall and Legacy Risk, but I also have added science centered games like Evolution, Photosynthesis and Terraforming Mars that have strong connections to the life sciences. I want fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students to learn deep thinking skills but also improve their science content knowledge.

I would like the opportunity to coach and guide these students after school in a games club.

My previous clubs were resounding successes and had an impact on many students. My hope is that the club will continue to foster a community at my school and give my students a love of board games that will last them a lifetime.
