Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a dynamic group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. It makes coming to work a pleasure. My students are so very unique and their minds are so intrigued that there is a question for everything. The students I service attend a Title I school and a large percent of our students face transition with their housing.

My students see school as a happy place and they tend to come every day looking for something new and exciting.

For many of their parents,​ our school is a place where they know their children will stay warm and be fed, providing basic supplies is often a struggle.

At this time, a large percentage of my students are reading at grade level, and performing on grade level in math. They work very hard and enjoy learning. if you want to see a child ask for more work, you'll see it in my class. Despite all of the challenges they face at home the always ask for extra homework.

My Project

Technology is a major push with this generation and without a cellphone or a computer, recess tends to be a time where the children lack social skills. They have to be taught cooperative learning and positive engagement with each other outside of completing academic tasks under the teacher's watchful eye. Playing board games during the cold winter months will allow my students the opportunity to work together and play in a positive way as a group. It will allow my students to develop important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying the interaction with others.

The skills children learn playing board games will definitely help prepare them for the future.

We plan to play the board games in the classroom during recess. They are greatly needed. Since last year our school building has been under construction and our concrete playground is surrounded by scaffolding and nets. The ultimate goal is​ to create an opportunity for my student to have fun and gain the necessary skills to help them become better at working as a team.
