Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Reading is fundamental" It is a lot easier to show this to our students by giving them high interest books than simply telling them reading is important.

Our students are inquisitive and eager 6th-12th graders that come from a community that has severe socio-economic challenges.

We are a campus library that serves three unique schools in New York. Our school library serves Title I schools with over 80% of the student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch.

My Project

We are requesting these high interest books to get our students interested and motivated about the reading process. Providing our students with books (like the Drama High and Bluford series) they can relate to and want to read on their own is part of our library mission. We want our students to get turned on to reading. One way we plan on getting them hooked on books is by creating mini-book clubs with the books requested. Our students are not avid readers, but with these new books they will surely be on their way. Realistic fiction will be our gateway book into a world of reading.

So many of our students have been turned off from reading at an early age.

Giving them access to the Bluford series and other books will help open up the world of reading. It will also help them in their current academics and future endeavors. This is an opportunity to help change the lives of youngsters for the better.
