My Students

I serve students in Kindergarten through 6th grade in the general education classrooms and in all three of the multiple handicap resource rooms. I also get to interact with students outside of my caseload, during a variety of school activities. Each of our students are unique, bringing a talent or gift to our school and community. Our school is in a low-income neighborhood, but that does not stop it from being a tight-knit community that does everything it can to support one another. The students at my school continue to exemplify that by showing support for each other, regardless of grade, classroom, and ability.

Despite what goes on in their world outside of school, each student strives to ensure safety, be respectful, and show kindness to one another.

They work hard on tasks/activities given by their classroom teachers and are always willing to give a helping hand. The students at my school are one-of-a-kind, and I am thankful to be able to work with them.

My Project

This year, my school is holding the "2nd Annual Blowing Bubbles for Autism" event to show support for our students, family members, friends, and community members with autism. I learned about this event from a professional development training I attended to learn how a speech-language pathologist can "step outside of the speech room" and work to bring together the school and community. Last year was the first year the event was at our school, and it was a huge success! The students became more aware of those in our building with autism. The students learned about their qualities and how they can support them each day.

"Blowing Bubbles for Autism" allows each student and community member to embrace the special gifts we have to offer, regardless of the challenges we face.

During the event, our school and community members will come together to blow bubbles and show awareness for autism. The individual bubble containers will be handed to each student to participate in filling the sky with bubbles which are a symbol of joy, laughter, and hope. Prior to the event, the students will use art supplies to create a designated color puzzle piece on their t-shirts to wear at the event. Bold colors (i.e. red, blue, yellow) and puzzle pieces are awareness symbols of autism. As stated previously, the entire event brings together the school for a snap shot moment. The differences each student may have are recognized and messages of hope are spread through happiness and laughter.
