This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. Each has a unique story to tell, but often, they have not yet mastered enough of the English language to share it. It's even harder to practice a new language though if the air around you may not be safe to breathe.

During the height of New York's infections this spring, our school and their families were hit the hardest of any area in the country: Several staff and many students were afraid to leave their homes, and many were infected.

We lost a staff member, and many students lost family to COVID-19. As my students learn how to maneuver through this new world, they will do it in the shadow of a global pandemic they know too well.

My Project

Earlier this year none of us could have imagined that we would all be living in fear of a virus, afraid to go to restaurants, to see friends and family, or even go to school. I could have told you back then, though, that the air in my school was not the healthiest. Our building opened in 1957. Not only does it not have the large windows of older buildings that can open wide, but it does not have any of the air circulation of newer ones with HVAC systems.

My students and I are stuck in a box with poor air flow, a perfect breeding ground for the transmission of COVID-19.

I want to mitigate the risk of transmission as much as possible, but due to shortsightedness and budget cuts, there is no room in our budget for air purifiers. Please help us get a large-volume purifier that will clean the air in our room several times an hour.

In this new world we live in, this should be a standard piece of equipment in every classroom, but it isn't. Please make a difference in our space and donate so my students and I can breathe a bit easier.
