Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The students at P.S.89 face multiple challenges. A good majority receives free or reduced price lunches due to limited resources. Meeting the needs of the diversified group where almost 50% of the student body consists of English Language Learners is particularly challenging.

The limitations of the school’s resources parallel that of some of the homes the students come from. Currently, the school shares its building with another Middle School while awaiting completion of construction on our own building. This arrangement requires that Grades 3 through 8 share the first floor of the school; students engage in Physical Education in their classes, library materials are housed within a few classrooms, and technology is extremely limited. Classrooms are spread over a wide area, there is common use of corridor space, and there is no computer lab. The increased needs of our Middle School students are minimally addressed as a result of physical and material restrictions. It was expected that the students would be able to enjoy the benefits of stability and increased access to resources such as a gymnasium and a library by September of 2009. However, the structural integrity of the buildings frame was found to be compromised. Students will have to continue to endure some of the conditions they are facing until our building is constructed. However, the limits on technology can be addressed by the introduction of SmartBoards and laptops for student use in the classr

We need one laptop computer. This computer will allow students to engage interactively in lessons in ways that stimulate both deeper processing and exposure to technology based learning. When students have had exposure to simple technology they have demonstrated improvements in comprehension, retention, and overall confidence. The class exudes a sense of pride when they complete a lesson where technology was used. Middle School students are especially responsive. Student achievement and access to technology are linked. Computer adaptive testing has become so commonplace that SAT’s are being administered through computers. There are numerous educational resources that are available to students via technology and it is clear that in order to maximize their potential they must have access to the same resources as their peers.

My challenge is to insure that our students master the same skills and achieve on the same assessments as students who have resources and spatial stability. You can help to educate the whole student by giving them access to the materials they need. Confidence and improved academic performance in math and literacy will occur when the students have technology. Thank you in advance for caring enough to give.
